St. George’s Anglican Church, situated at the intersection of Charlotte and Nepean Streets in the heart of Sydney, Nova Scotia, is a distinguished example of Gothic Revival architecture. Constructed between 1785 and 1791, this stone landmark embodies a timeless and dignified aesthetic. Both the church and its adjoining graveyard are officially recognized for their provincial heritage significance.

Heritage Value

St. George’s Anglican Church is historically significant as the oldest Anglican church on Cape Breton Island and the oldest building in Sydney. It is renowned for its long-standing history and for exemplifying the influential role of its parish council during colonial times in Cape Breton. The church's cemetery is the final resting place for many of Sydney's early notable citizens.  

Construction of St. George’s Church began in 1785, carried out by engineers from the British 33rd Regiment of Foot, coinciding with Sydney's establishment as the capital of the new Colony of Cape Breton; however, it was not completed or officially recognized as a parish until 1791.

Architectural Value

  St. George’s Church demonstrates remarkable architectural evolution since its inception. Originally a modest stone structure in the Gothic Revival style, it measured approximately 18 by 12 meters and featured three circular windows on both the north and south walls. In 1853, a chancel and vestry were added, followed by extensive reconstruction from 1859 into the early 1860s, incorporating Gothic Revival elements such as an open ceiling and pointed windows adorned with stained glass. A stone tower with a spire replaced the original wooden tower damaged by a storm in 1873, and aside from a crypt added in 1974, the church largely retains its post-renovation appearance. The interior houses memorial tablets, stained-glass windows honoring notable individuals, wall-mounted headstones, and a Casavant organ. This stone Gothic Revival style reflects important missionary principles of the era and a significant period in English Christian architecture, with such stone examples being rare across Nova Scotia.  

St. George's Graveyard is celebrated for its early sandstone and limestone grave markers, which exemplify historic burial practices and showcase exceptional craftsmanship and folk artistry, including a distinctive collection of tomb-style markers created by local artisans..

Historical and Spiritual Value

For nearly two hundred twenty years, St. George’s Church has functioned as a site for worship among residents of Sydney. Initially encompassing all regions of Cape Breton Island within its Parish jurisdiction, it served as the chapel for British garrison forces until 1854, when it was granted Royal Pew status—becoming officially recognized as a place for members of the Royal Family should they visit—a role it continues to uphold today.

Furthermore, St. George’s Church has played an essential part in Cape Breton’s narrative during its time as an independent colony; notably during the Colonial Period (1784-1820), when no sessions were convened for the colony's House Assembly—the positions held within St. George’s vestry were amongst few elected roles available on Cape Breton Island at that time, attracting various local figures who sought election to further their political aspirations.

Many prominent individuals from Sydney's Colonial Period onward are interred within St. George's Graveyard; memorials inside include one honoring Judge A.C. Dodd—Cape Breton Island's first Chief Magistrate—as well as others commemorating significant local figures such as Bishop Hibbert Binney (the fourth Bishop of Nova Scotia) through memorial windows located in both chancel and nave areas.

Powerball Jackpot

The Powerball jackpot has climbed to an estimated $856 million in anticipation of the drawing on Saturday night, making it the eighth-largest jackpot in the game’s history. This amount represents the highest Powerball prize since a remarkable $1.817 billion was claimed in Arkansas on Christmas Eve 2025. The most recent Powerball win occurred on May 2, 2026, when two tickets from Florida and Texas collectively won a $20 million jackpot.

This substantial increase in the jackpot highlights a notable summer rise.

Currently, this jackpot ranks as the eighth greatest ever recorded for Powerball.

It is also the largest amount since the massive $1.817 billion prize was awarded in Arkansas.

The last winning tickets were sold on May 2, 2026, with two tickets from Florida and Texas splitting a total of $20 million.

Winning at Powerball is notably challenging, with odds standing at an astounding 1 in 292.2 million for participants both in the U.S. and the U.K.

Lottery officials are optimistic that broadening the player pool will facilitate quicker growth of Powerball jackpots by luring more players through larger prizes.

Powerball tickets are available for purchase at a price of $2 and can be bought across 45 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

A DECADE OF CASINO FIASCO, 

Social media has brought renewed attention to a decade-old legal case involving a New York woman who reportedly won a $43 million jackpot on a casino slot machine but was ultimately denied the payout.

On July 6, Aisar, a founder in finance and cryptocurrency, shared a post referencing the incident from 2016. The post recounted how “a single mother raised in foster care inserted 40 cents into a machine, saw it display $43 MILLION, took a selfie, returned the following day, and received only $2.25 along with a dinner reservation,” as noted in his commentary.

The post highlighted Katrina Bookman’s nearly $43 million "win" at Resorts World Casino in Queens, New York, during August 2016, including an image of the slot machine displaying the winning amount. However, the casino dismissed the winnings as resulting from a malfunction and only offered Bookman a steak dinner and $2.25 instead. There is no public record indicating that she has received any additional compensation.

“I feel like they treated me unfairly,” Katrina Bookman expressed to the New York Daily News shortly after the event.

Bookman filed a lawsuit against the casino; however, her negligence claim was dismissed by a New York City court in August 2018 while allowing her breach of contract claim to proceed.

A decade later, interest in this case persists. Aisar's post garnered close to 17 million views and 19,000 likes and was subsequently covered by Yahoo News on July 7. Many commentators voiced their thoughts on malfunctioning casino machines and questioned why casinos often escape accountability.

Gaming and legal experts have suggested that critics raise valid points despite courts typically siding with casinos in cases concerning faulty machine payouts due to state regulations that favor gaming establishments.

“State gaming commissions are legally required to prioritize gaming facilities when hardware malfunctions lead to incorrect payouts,” explained Robert Tsigler, founder and lead attorney at The Law Offices of Robert Tsigler, speaking with Moneywise.

Tsigler noted that legal language historically categorizes all hardware or software errors caused by malfunctioning equipment as invalidating claims for advertised payouts. As such, if there is an error showing $43 million on display due to hardware issues, it would be reduced to zero or revert back to the player's initial bet of $1.

“Players also encounter physical notices from machines alongside administrative codes that define screen displays as non-binding informational content,” he added. “Gaming regulatory bodies uniformly enforce this rule which leaves players with limited avenues for relief through administrative appeals.”

Even photographic evidence of multi-million-dollar payouts displayed on slot machines does not guarantee success in legal challenges faced by consumers within gaming contexts.

“The house usually retains an advantage according to documented rules,” remarked Nick Heimlich, owner and attorney at Nick Heimlich Law in San Jose, California. “When programmed odds do not align with what is shown on the machine’s display, that figure is considered erroneous and not an offer since regulators approve these odds.”

Consequently, players may find themselves astonished when encountering screens indicating millions that don’t equate to actual commitments.

“This situation is outlined within terms that most players overlook,” Heimlich pointed out.
